About Us

Gospel Mass every Sunday at 11 AM

At St. Josephine Bakhita Mission Parish

809 S 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85007

Our mission as members of the Roman Catholic Church, we proclaim our mission to accept the responsibility of being both Black and Catholic. We continue to reaffirm our spiritual bond as we share our faith, love, cultural treasures and heritage. We endeavor to empower Black Catholics for the purpose of reaching out to the Black community within the Diocese of Phoenix, and to assume initiative and leadership in providing opportunities for meeting our religious needs.

We shall continue to seek fulfillment within the Catholic Church. We will be untiring in our efforts to ensure that all Black members of the Church are accepted always in the Body of Christ. As God’s children, we believe we will be accorded every opportunity for spiritual fulfillment and full acceptance as the Church is one and home to us all.

Who We Are

The use of the word Black with a capital B, refers to our culture, and is interchangeable with the term African American. We are about celebrating the culture of African and African Americans in Mass, with the gifts that are shared with the universal Catholic Church, in order to fulfill the mission of meeting people where they are at and bringing them to a closer relationship with God.

This ministry is about inclusion, not segregation; culture not color, and enculturation not assimilation.

We are reminded in, 1 Corinthians 12 that the body is Christ and the parts are the diverse and beautiful cultures within it. Our universal Catholic faith loves, encourages and supports the richness of all cultures.

25 In that way, the parts of the body will not take sides. All of them will take care of one another. 26 If one  part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy. 27 You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it.                                                                                                                                  1 Corinthians 12:12-25
