“My summer as a Totus Tuus missionary was amazing! It sparked in me a radical joy and trust in the Lord that brightened my path to priesthood.”

Fr. Fernando Camou, Studies in Rome

“I loved my time in Totus Tuus. It was great to teach the kids the faith through the lessons, talks, and testimonies. I got to know the people I worked with and I grew to love everyone I came in contact with. There was a spirit of joy present in working with the kids. Going to Mass, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, rosary, divine mercy chaplet, and holy hours together were precious moments for me. Each team member supported each other and helped each other grow in holiness and in love of God.”

Calling All College Students!

We’re inviting you to give two months in the summer of 2020 serving the Lord and the youth and young people of Phoenix through being a Totus Tuus missionary.

Totus Tuus missionaries will serve in parish summer camps throughout the Diocese of Phoenix from late May to end of July, 2020.

Totus Tuus gives you the opportunity to witness to Christ to children and teens from 1st to 12th grade in dynamic, energizing summer camps that focus on prayer, the sacraments, evangelization and catechesis.

Don’t worry: you’ll be thoroughly trained in an intensive 10-day training to equip you for the summer, as well as prepare you spiritually for this wonderful work.

What to Expect

  • The Teams – At the end of training, teams of 2 men and 2 women will head out to parishes to hold week-long summer camps for 1st-12th graders: 1st-6th graders during the day session, and 7th-12th graders for a shorter evening session.

  • The Camps – These summer mission camps include mass, adoration, confession, catechesis, talks, testimonies, small groups, games, recess, songs, and a vocations panel for teens. Each team spends one week at a parish, then moves on to the next scheduled parish. You’ll stay with host families along the way.

  • The Road Trip – Parishes hosting Totus Tuus for the summer of 2020 are in both metropolitan Phoenix, and as far north as Lake Havasu, so you’ll get to see a lot of the beautiful state!

An Interview with Fr. Fernando Camou, Totus Tuus Missionary, 2009

How did you hear about TT?

While I was in seminary, my friend Jimmy Mitchell invited me to give up a summer to serve as a missionary for Totus Tuus.

What surprised you?

I was so surprised to find that the experience was very missionary! Each day, we depended on the generosity of families for housing and food. As spreaders of the Good News, we had an intense prayer routine and then gave every ounce of our energy to serving the youth and their families. I couldn’t believe how incredibly rewarding the intense sacrifices were.

What was your favorite part?

I can’t pick one thing. Top three favorites: getting to see kids experience God in a deep and lasting way; building life-long friendships with my teammates; and having a lot of ridiculous FUN!

What would you tell someone who is considering TT but isn’t sure?

We can talk all day about serving the Lord and giving your life to Him totally. But jumping into Totus Tuus is a quick immersion in real self-giving that will begin to set in your soul a deep experience of what joy-filled self- giving is like. How to discern your vocation will become much clearer because of what the Lord will teach you about what it’s like for you to give yourself TOTALLY, totally to Him, through a serious prayer life, meaningful community, and radical service to others.

What was community life like?

Living in community meant getting trained as a missionary with a group of strangers and then returning from a missionary summer with life-long friends. We spent the best of times together. We spent the worst of times together. Whether we were performing a silly skit or falling asleep in the chapel, we pushed each other to never give less than everything in the present moment. What was community life like? It was giving and receiving love in action.
