Director of Music

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Director of Music is responsible for the effective planning, preparing and execution of the appropriate music for weekend Masses, weddings, and funerals. They organize, maintain, and conduct the choir. They ensure the optimum performance of the organ or piano. Display a professional level of musical talent.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Play organ/piano and sing for Sunday masses, all Holy Days and special masses, including but not excluded to funerals and Choir

· Enlists and train choir members

· Conducts choir rehearsals

· Conducts choir at scheduled choir masses throughout the year

· Plans, purchases, generates and teaches music for the choir

· Schedules and supervises any stipend Cantor, Organist and/or Choir accompanist

· Hires, schedules and supervises professional cantors, organists and other musicians as needed

· Ensure that the sound system is properly maintained

· Oversees yearly Music Department budget

· Selects music for all pertinent liturgies based on the liturgical year and readings

· Chooses music that is familiar to the congregation and is easily sung

· Introduces new music gradually and with enough repetition to ensure retention

· Prepares and reproduces worship aids for weekend Masses and other liturgies

· Generates and distributes music for cantors and other musicians

· Prepares rehearsal aids for cantors and choir

· Writes descant parts for other instruments used in liturgies

· Manages the Organ Concert Series

Other related tasks as deemed necessary and/or assigned by Business Director or Pastor

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

· Bachelor’s degree in music, however a master’s degree or higher is preferred

· Minimum 2 years experience in a church setting preferably

· Experience in dealing with contractors and vendors.

· Experience in managing a budget.

· Possess leadership skills as well as interpersonal skills.

· Knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite programs: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher

· Proficient in computer skills and have access to email and internet when off-site.

· Complete and maintain Diocesan Safe Environment Training as required by the Diocese.

· Knowledge of all diocesan guidelines and procedures

· Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
