Fr. Frank Bartel

Fr. Frank Bartel  died August 30, 2023,  at the age of 79.

Fr. Bartel was born on May 15, 1944 in Buffalo. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Buffalo, N.Y. on May 23, 1970. In 1976, for health reasons, Fr. Bartel came to the Diocese of Phoenix and served as Parochial Vicar at St. Gregory Parish in Phoenix. In June of 1978, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix and served as Pastor at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, St. Melany’s Byzantine Catholic Church and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. He also served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Glendale, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale, Blessed Sacrament Parish and Resurrection Parish. He also served as Pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. In May 2010, Fr. Bartel retired from active ministry.

Fr. Mathew Plathottam

Fr. Mathew Plathottam  died July 31, 2023,  at the age of 83.

Fr. Plathottam was born on March 9, 1940 in Kerala, India. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 17, 1967 for the Diocese of Mananthavady, India. Fr. Plathottam has served as Pastor in various parishes in India. In 1996, he began serving as Parochial Vicar at Blessed Sacrament in Scottsdale and in 1999, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix. He served as Parochial Vicar at St. Anne Parish in Gilbert, Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree and St. Theresa Parish in Phoenix. In 2010, he retired and moved back to India.

Services: Funeral Mass for Fr. Plathottam will be held in India.

Fr. Henry R. Wasielewski

Fr. Henry R. Wasielewski  died July 19, 2023,  at the age of 93.

Fr. Henry was born on February 21, 1930, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 93 years old. He was ordained on June 6, 1964, for the Diocese of Tucson. His first priestly assignment was at St. Mary’s Parish in Chandler, Arizona. When the Diocese of Phoenix was established in 1069, he remained in Phoenix. Fr. Henry served as Parochial Vicar for Sacred Heart Parish in Clifton, St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Phoenix, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Phoenix, and St. Martin de Porres Parish in Phoenix where he was also assigned as Pastor. Fr. Henry’s last assignment was as Administrator at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Queen Creek and he helped out at St. James Parish in Glendale during his retirement.

Msgr. Richard Moyer

Msgr. Richard Moyer died June 27, 2023,  at the age of 91.

Msgr. Moyer was born on January 12, 1932 in Sandusky, Ohio. He was 91 years old. He was ordained on May 3, 1964 for the Diocese of Tucson. His first priestly assignment was St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Yuma and then Sts. Peter and Paul in Tucson. When the Diocese of Phoenix was established in 1969, he remained in Phoenix. Among his many pastoral assignments, he served at Catholic Charities Foundation; he was Vicar of Northern Arizona, pastor of St. John Vianney in Sedona, rector of Sts. Simon and Jude Cathedral, pastor of St. Pius X, Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree, St. Timothy and St. Jerome Parish in Phoenix, where he was pastor from 1975 to 1984.

Among his many pastoral accomplishments, Msgr. Moyer was also Vicar General of the diocese; he built parishes and camps, established the Foundation for Senior Living and was a founding board member of Life Teen. He also met Pope St. John Paul II on occasion of his Apostolic Visit to Phoenix in 1987. On that same pastoral visit, St. John Paul II conferred on him the honorary title of “Monsignor”.

Rev. William P. Healy

Fr. William Healy died March 7, 2023,  at the age of 83.

Fr. Healy was born on November 19, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey. He was 83 years old. He entered the Dominican Order in 1959 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1966. Fr. Healy came to the Diocese of Phoenix in February of 1985 and served as Parochial Vicar at Christ The King Parish in Mesa. He is well remembered there for his excellent homilies.  He was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix on July 1, 1988. He served as pastor at Christ The King Parish in Mesa and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale.

Services: Vigil Service on Sunday, March 15, 2023, at St. Patrick Parish (10815 N 84^th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85260) at 6:00pm. Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 16, 2023, at St. Patrick Parish (10815 N 84^th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85260) at 11:00am

Rev. James F. Turner

Fr. Jim Turner died January 14, 2023,  at the age of 68.

Fr. Jim was born on April  7, 1954 in Freeport, New York. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Phoenix on June 2, 1984. As a newly ordained priest, Fr. Turner served as parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Phoenix and later at Holy Spirit Parish in Tempe. He served as pastor at St. Pius X Parish in Flagstaff. He is also the founding pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Glendale. On January 1, 2020, Fr. Turner retired from active ministry.

Services: Vigil Service on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at St. Thomas More Parish (6180 W. Utopia Rd, Glendale, AZ 85308) at 6:00pm & his Funeral Mass will be Monday, January 23, 2023, at St. Thomas More Parish at 11:00am.

Burial will take place at a future date in Flagstaff, AZ.

Rev. Scott Sperry

Fr. Scott Sperry died December 23, 2022,  at the age of 37.

Fr. Scott was born on December 7, 1985 in Mesa, Arizona. He was baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tempe and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel grade school and Seton High School. In 2005, he was accepted to the diocesan seminary of the Diocese of Phoenix. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 28, 2014 for the Diocese of Phoenix.

Fr. Scott served as Parochial Vicar at Christ the King Parish, Chaplain at Seton High School, Bourgate High School and St. Benedictine University in Mesa. He also served at St. Bernadette Parish and Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral.

Services: Viewing will be on  January 4, 2023 at 5-7pm followed by Evening Prayer at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 2121 S Rural Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282; the Funeral Mass will be held on January 5, 2022  at  10am, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish followed by the burial at Queen of Heaven Cemetery; 1562 E Baseline RD, Mesa, AZ 85204.

Rev. Raul Lopez Marzetti

Fr. Raul Lopez Marzetti died December 15, 2022,  at the age of 68.

Fr. Raul was born on October 9, 1954 in Rosario, Province of Santa Fe, Argentina. He was 68 years old and was ordained to the priesthood on August 28, 1985, for the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján, Argentina.

Fr. Raul served the first years of his priestly ministry in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján. In 2001, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona and served as Parochial Vicar of San Francisco de Asis Parish in Flagstaff. During the next years, he also served as Parochial Vicar at St. Anne Parish in Gilbert, St. Daniel the Prophet in Phoenix, Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, St. Mary Mediatrix in Yarnell and Good Shepherd in Congress, and St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Phoenix. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix on May 19, 2008. In December of 2019, Fr. López was granted permission to have a pastoral experience in the Archdiocese of New York at St. Jerome Parish, run by the Priests of the Institute of the Incarnate Word. There he retired on January 2, 2020.

Services: Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 12:30pm at St. John Baptist de LaSalle in Chillum, Maryland. He will be buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.

Rev. Brian Bell

Fr. Brian Bell died December 14, 2022,  at the age of 80.

Fr. Brian Bell was born June 15, 1942 and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 31, 1970 and sent to Jamaica, West Indies to serve as a missionary. In 1975 Fr. Bell returned to the U.S. where he served as Deputy Superintendent Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Miami, Florida.

In 1976 he joined the Arizona Army National Guard and at the same time served in several parishes in the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona. Fr. Bell entered the Arizona Army National Guard and served from 1984 to 1990 as Senior Chaplain for the 162^nd Air National Guard. From 1990 to 2002, he served in active duty as chaplain in the U.S. Air Force. After retiring from the Air Force, Fr. Bell served as the Parochial Vicar of St. Joan of Arc Parish. From 2003-2005, he served as Pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Wickenburg. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix on March 31, 2005. From 2005 to his retirement from ministry in 2019, he was Pastor of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in Scottsdale.

Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 23, 2022 at 11:00am at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish- 10755 N 124^th St. Scottsdale, AZ 85259.

Rev. Charles Bormann

Fr. Charlie Bormann died December 5, 2022,  at the age of 89.

Fr. Charlie Bormann was born July 22, 1933 and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 31, 1958 for the Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa and served in different parish assignments until he moved to the Diocese of Phoenix in 1981. He began ministering at AZ State Hospital. He especially loved prison ministry; he ministered at the Federal Correctional Institution and at Nellis Federal Prison Camp in Las Vegas. Fr. Bormann was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in June 1987. In 1998, Fr. Bormann served as Associate Pastor at Holy Cross Parish.

Funeral services will take place in Iowa.

Rev. Jorge Cañez

Fr. Jorge Cañez died August 4, 2022, on the feast of St. John Vianney, patron saint of priests at the age of 75.

Fr. Jorge Cañez was born June 4, 1947 and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 19, 1979.

Fr. Jorge served at Queen of Peace Parish, St. Margaret Parish, Holy Family Parish, St. Edward Parish and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish

Rev. John Coleman

Fr. John Coleman died August 2, 2022, at the age of 75.

Fr. John Coleman was born May 30, 1947 in Southern California and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 4, 1988.

Fr. John has served the Diocese in various capacities and in many of our local parishes, among these: St. Theresa Parish, Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral, St. Maria Goretti Parish, Christ the King Parish, St. Rose Parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish,  St. Daniel the Prophet Parish, St. Andrew Parish, and as the founding Pastor of St. Clare of Assisi in Surprise.

Services: Visitation will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022, from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at Queen of Heaven Catholic Funeral Home, 1562 E Baseline Rd, Mesa, AZ 85204. Rev. Stephen J. Sedlock, C.S.C.

Fr. Stephen J. Sedlock, C.S.C. died June 24, 2022, at the age of 85.

Fr. Stephen J. Sedlock, C.S.C. was born February 5, 1937 and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 9, 1966 for the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

Fr. Steve resided at Casa Santa Cruz and served local parishes since 2009.  Among others he helped out at St. Luke’s, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Bridget’s and St. Louis the King.

Services: The funeral will be Friday, July 8, 9:30 am EDT at The Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame.

Rev. Luis Baldonado, O.F.M.

Fr. Luis Baldonado, OFM. died June 21, 2022, at the age of 97.

Fr. Baldonado was born June 14, 1925 and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 8, 1952 for the Franciscan Friars.

He served in Colorado, California and Arizona.  Fr. Luis served for three years in the 1980’s as the Director of the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale.  He served as Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Phoenix and as Guardian of St. Mary’s from  1994 until his retirement in 2006.  He continued to live at St. Mary Basilica during much of his retirement  and  to serve alongside parish staff spending his days hearing confessions and offering spiritual direction for those who came to the door of the parish.

Fr. Tiernan O’Callaghan, O. Carm.

Fr. Tiernan O’Callaghan, O. Carm. died May 31, 2022, at the age of 90.

Fr. Tiernan was born August 31, 1931 and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 26, 1956 for the Order of Carmelites.

He served as parochial Vicar and Pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Phoenix from 1990 – 2002. He also served on the Diocesan Finance Committee. He retired in July of 2002 and continued to be active in the Cursillo retreats.

Fr. Michael Boyle, CM

Fr. Michael Boyle, CM died April 3, 2022, at the age of 93.

Fr. Boyle was born September 24, 1928 and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 7, 1959 for the Congregating of the Mission.

He served as Parochial Vicar and Parochial Administrator at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Phoenix. He retired in 2003 and the last 9 years of his retirement he lived in residence at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale.

Fr. Ramuald Zantua, DS

Fr. Ramuald Zantua, DS died December 30, 2021, at the age of 78.

Fr. Zantua was born December 31, 1943 and Ordained to the Priesthood on April 21, 1970. Fr. Zantua founded the Disciples of Hope community with the assistance of Fr. Julian A. Barrosa in the Philippines.

Fr. Joseph O’Donnell, CSC

Fr. Joseph O’Donnell, CSC died November 23, 2021 at the age of 88.

Fr. O’Donnell was born October 13, 1933 and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 8, 1960 for the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

Fr. O’Donnell served for 27 years as a Naval Chaplain. He arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix in July of 1997. He served as a chaplain to those in law enforcement and assisted at several parishes and hospitals in the valley including the Veterans Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital over the years. His ministry with the Arizona Department of Public Safety helped console hundreds of families during their time of loss. He spent serval weeks ministering at the World Trade Center in New York after 9/11. And he assisted the evacuees from Hurricane Katrina when 3,000 people were relocated to Phoenix and were housed initially at the Colosseum in Phoenix. In his later years of life, he lived at the Beatitudes Retirement Community in Phoenix where he regularly offered Mass for the residents.

Reflecting on his life and priesthood at his 50th anniversary Fr. Joe stated, “I am surely more real than I was on the day of my ordination. I have my own scars. I am far from perfect. I have made my mistakes and have tried to correct them as best I could. I have learned that the life of Faith is not lived in the head. I keep learning that all life is a gift from God. I believe in a giving and forgiving God, a loving God. I believe in a Church that will survive every challenge placed before it. We Are the Church, all of us. We are all on the same journey of life. The priesthood does not give one a free ride; far from it. “To whom more has been given, more shall be demanded.” I pray for the grace to end my days in God’s hands.”

Fr. Mark Harrington

Fr. Mark Harrington died July 12, 2021, at the age of 71.

Fr. Harrington was born December 11, 1950, and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 26, 1979, for the Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in July of 2005.

Fr. Gregory M. Kotnis, J.C.L.

Fr. Gregory M. Kotnis, J.C.L. died February 5, 2021 at the age of 90.

Fr. Kotnis was born September 20, 1930 in Poland and Ordained to the Priesthood on June 17, 1956 for the Order of St. Paul the Hermit.

Fr. Kotnis arrived in Phoenix in January 1980 and was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in 1983. He served as parochial vicar of St. Louis the King, St. Clement of Rome and Our Lady of the Lake in Lake Havasu where he served until retirement in 1995. In retirement he served parishes in the Sun City and Surprise area until his health declined. Fr. Kotnis was a linguist who spoke Polish, Italian, French, and English.

Services: Vigil/visitation will take place on Sunday, February 14, from noon-2 p.m. with the vigil at 1 p.m., Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, 9925 W. Thomas Road, Avondale. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, February 15, at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Parish, 14818 W. Deer Valley Drive, Sun City West.

Fr. Henry Dahl

Fr. Henry Dahl died Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the age of 79.

Fr. Dahl was born June 26, 1941 in Staten Island, New York, and Ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, on June 8, 1996.

Fr. Dahl retired to Sun City, Arizona, in June 2011.  In his retirement Fr. Dahl mostly served in parishes throughout Sun City and Wickenburg.

Fr. Kieran Kleczewski

Fr. Kieran Kleczewski died Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at the age of 70.

Fr. Kieran was born July 28, 1950 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Ordained to the Priesthood to the Order of Saint Benedict on April 30, 1978 and incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in 1997.

Fr. Kieran served at St. Joseph Parish in Phoenix, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale, Holy Trinity Newman Center in Flagstaff, San Francisco de Asis Parish in Flagstaff, All Saints Parish in Mesa, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Litchfield Park, St. Michael Parish in Gila Bend, St. John Vianney Parish in Sedona. Fr. Kieran was the Director of the Office of Worship from 2004-2020.

Fr. Raymond Hannigan

Rev. Ray Hannigan died Saturday, July 17, 2020, at the age of 93.

Fr. Hannigan was born July 14, 1927, in Schumacher Ontario, Canada and Ordained to the Priesthood May 31, 1977, for the Diocese of Helena, Montana.  He arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix July of 2004 as a “winter visitor” and served at All Saints Parish in Mesa.

Fr. Hannigan is predeceased by his wife Mary Margaret (Peg) McLellan in 1971 and his eldest son Paul in 2020. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Anna (Paul’s wife), Brian, Casey, Tim, Michael, Matthew, and Mary.

Services:  Visitation will be held Thursday, July 23, 2020, 4-6 p.m., with the Rosary at 5:30 p.m.  The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 24, 2020, at 10 a.m., at All Saints Parish, 1534 N. Recker Road, Mesa, AZ.

Fr. Patrick Smith

Rev. Patrick Smith died Sunday, May 24, 2020, at the age of 76.

Fr. Smith was born April 28, 1944, in Ireland and Ordained to the Priesthood June 11, 1967, for the Diocese of Tucson and incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in 1969 when the diocese was established.

Fr. Smith served as parochial vicar at St. Jerome Parish, St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, St. Daniel the Prophet in Scottsdale, Holy Family Parish in Phoenix, Christ the King Parish in Mesa, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale. He served many years faithfully as a chaplain for Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by a sister in Michigan and sisters and a brother in Ireland.

Msgr. Michael O'Grady

Msgr. Michael O'Grady died Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the age of 85.

Msgr. O'Grady was born May 21, 1934 in Ireland and Ordained to the Priesthood June 6, 1958 for the Diocese of Tucson and incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in 1969 when the diocese was established.

Msgr. O'Grady served at St. Theresa Parish in Phoenix, Holy Cross Parish in Mesa, St. Daniel Parish in Scottsdale, Christ the King Parish in Mesa, Holy Spirit Parish in Tempe and as Rector of Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral until he retired in 2005.  He kept active serving the people of God in his retirement offering the Sacraments and retreats and as Chaplain for the Cursillo movement.  He was a humble and generous priest who always had a heart for those in need.  His great humor, demeanor and holiness will be greatly missed.

Rev. Frank Fernandez

Rev. Frank Fernandez died Monday, April 8, 2019 at the age of 80.

Fr. Fernandez was born October 8, 1938 in Phoenix and Ordained to the Priesthood May 19, 1979 for the Diocese of Phoenix.

Fr. Fernandez served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Glendale, St. Gregory Parish, St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Phoenix, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale as Parochial Vicar and St. Joseph Parish in Phoenix as Pastor.  He retired in 2010.

Rev. Matthias (Matt) Feit

Rev. Matthias (Matt) Feit died, Sunday March 30, 2019, at the age of 95.

Fr. Feit was born September 8, 1923 and Ordained to the Priesthood July 2, 1956 for the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

Fr. Feit arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix in 1974. He incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix in September 1977.  He served at St. Gregory, St. Theresa, and Most Holy Trinity Parishes as Parochial Vicar and at St. James, Holy Spirit, and St. Elizabeth Seton Parishes as Pastor. He retired in 1993.

Services:  Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa Parish, 5045 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018

Rev. Douglas Lorig

Rev. Douglas Lorig died Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the age of 82.

Fr. Lorig was born July 31, 1936 and Ordained to the Priesthood June 15, 1984.  Fr. Lorig is survived by his wife, Nancy, and children, Michael, Heather, David, and Amy along with many grandchildren.

Fr. Lorig served at Seton High School in Chandler as Chaplain (1984-1986), St. Anne Parish in Gilbert as Parochial Vicar (1986-1992) and Pastor (1992-2006), and St. Maria Goretti Parish in Scottsdale as Pastor from 2006 until his retirement in 2016.

Services:  Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at 10 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Parish, 6261 N. Granite Reef Road, Scottsdale, AZ, 85250.

Msgr. Edward G. Meulemans

Msgr. Edward G. Meulemans died December 24, 2018 at the age of 90.

Msgr. Meulemans was born February 23, 1028 in Glenwood City, Wisconsin and was Ordained to the Priesthood June 11, 1960 for the Diocese of Superior.  Among the many responsibilities he held over the years he served as Rector of the Cathedral and Vicar General for the Diocese of Superior.

Msgr. Meulemans arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix in 1998 and served the Native American people at all the missions especially St. Peters Mission and School in Bapchule, AZ.

Services:  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 29th at 9am at St. Peters Mission Church in Bapchule, AZ.  Burial will take place in the Diocese of Superior in Wisconsin.

Rev. Joseph Krynen

Rev. Joseph Krynen died Monday, December 17, 2018 at the age of 99.

Fr. Krynen was born January 16, 1919 in the Netherlands and was Ordained to the Priesthood June 15, 1946 for the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers).  Fr. Krynen incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix July 19, 1979.  He served as a priest for 72 years.

Fr. Krynen served at St. John Vianney Parish, Goodyear, St. Catherine of Sienna Parish as Parochial Vicar, Holy Family Parish, Phoenix and St. Mary Parish, Chandler as Administrator and Pastor before retiring in 1988.  Fr. Krynen answered the call in 1990 and 1991 to assist in administration for St. Michael Parish in Gila Bend and St. Mary Mission in Yarnell until he retired, again, in 1994 to live in residence at Resurrection Parish until his death.

Rev. William Knott

Fr. William Knott died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the age of 86.

Fr. Knott was born March 22, 1932 in Elgin, Illinois and was Ordained to the Priesthood June 28, 1959 for the Diocese of Rockford, Illinois.

Fr. Knott served throughout the Diocese of Rockford until his retirement in 1995.  In his retirement he moved to Sun City West and served at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish.

Rev. Nathan White

Fr. Nathan White died Monday, September 18, 2018 at the age of 80.

Fr. White was born March 3, 1938 and was Ordained to the Priesthood on June 29, 2002 for the Diocese of Stockton, California.  In retirement he moved to Arizona and served at St. Thomas More and St. James Parishes.

Rev. M. Eugene O'Carroll

Rev. M. Eugene O’Carroll died Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the age of 81. Fr. O’Carroll was born February 6, 1937, and was ordained to the priesthood in Ireland for the Diocese of Tucson.

Fr. O’Carroll served as Parochial Vicar of Holy Cross Parish in Tucson, Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Miami, Immaculate Conception in Douglas, St. Thomas the Apostle in Phoenix, and as pastor of St. Henry in Buckeye and St. Paul in Phoenix where he retired in 2008.  In his retirement, he served throughout the diocese and in 2010 he was the Administrator of St. Luke Parish.

Services: Funeral Mass will be held September 6, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Parish, 330 West Coral Gables Drive, Phoenix.  Burial will be at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Killybegs, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland.

Most Rev. Thomas J. O'Brien

Most Rev. Thomas J. O’Brien, retired Bishop of Phoenix, died Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the age of 82. Bishop O’Brien was born November 29, 1935, and was ordained to the Priesthood May 7, 1961, to the Diocese of Tucson.

Then-Fr. O’Brien served as Parochial Vicar of Immaculate Conception Parish in Douglas, St. Theresa and St. Gregory Parishes in Phoenix, as Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Phoenix, and he held various positions in the Chancery from 1961 until he was named Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix in 1982 where he served until 2003 when he retired.

Services:  Funeral Mass will be held August 31, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Basilica, 231 North 3^rd Street, Phoenix.

Rev. Robert Binta

Rev. Robert Binta died Monday, August 20, 2018 at the age of 56. Fr. Binta was born in Uganda on March 14, 1962, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 31, 1991, for the Diocese of Fort Portal, Uganda.

Fr. Binta arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix in 2007 and was incardinated to the diocese on May 16, 2012. He served as Parochial Vicar of St. Paul Parish from 2007 - 2013 and Pastor of St. Benedict Parish 2013 - 2018.

Services:  Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 24, 2018, 10am, at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 4715 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix.

Rev. Gregory P. Rice, MHM

Rev. Gregory P. Rice, MHM died Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the age of 78.

Fr. Rice was born September 12, 1939 and was Ordained to the Priesthood June 25, 1972.

After Ordination Fr. Rice went to the Rawalpindi Diocese, Pakistan, where he served as a Mill Hill Missionary until November 2005 when he returned to the United States.

Fr. Rice arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix for his “retirement” years in 2007.  He assisted Native American Ministry and served as Canonical Pastor of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist Mission as well as Director of Native American Ministry from 2012-2015.  Fr. Rice also served as interim Parochial Administrator of St. Joseph Parish in Phoenix and St. Maria Goretti Parish in Scottsdale.  Fr. Rice also served parishes throughout the diocese.

Services: Funeral Mass (Requiem) will be held August 30, 2018, at 10:30 a. .m at St. Maria Goretti Parish, 6261 N. Granite Reef Road, Scottsdale.

 Rev. Michael Minogue

Rev. Michael Minogue died Monday, February 26, 2018 at the age of 82.

Fr. Minogue was born February 17, 1936 and was Ordained to the Priesthood May 23, 1981.

Fr. Minogue served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale as Parochial Vicar, Most Holy Trinity Parish as Parochial Administrator, Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Phoenix and  Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Sun City as Pastor.

Rev. Silvan Francis Boyle, O. Carm. died Friday, January 26, 2018, at the age of 94.

Rev. Blasé Meyer

Blasé Meyer died Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the age of 76.

Fr. Meyer was born September 27, 1941 and Ordained to the Priesthood on May 18, 1968.

Fr. Meyer served at St. Paul, St. Timothy, St. Gregory and St. Clement of Rome Parishes as Parochial Vicar and Holy Spirit, Holy Cross and St. Maria Goretti Parishes as Pastor.  In retirement he served as supply assistance to many parishes.

Rev. Peter Rossa

Rev. Peter Rossa died Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the age of 52.

Fr. Rossa was born October 23, 1964 and Ordained to the Priesthood June 7, 2003.

Fr. Rossa served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale and St. Timothy Parish in Mesa as Parochial Vicar.  He was pastor of St. Bernadette Parish from 2007 until his death.

Rev. Victor Lamore

Fr. Victor Lamore died Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the age of 75.

Fr. Lamore was born on July 12, 1941 in Canada and was Ordained to the Priesthood on May 3, 1980 for the Diocese of Ogdensburg, New York.

Fr. Lamore served parishes in Plattsburgh, Malone, Indian Lake, Rosiere, West Leyden and Ray Brook, New York.  He moved to El Mirage in 2015 and served at St. Joachim and Anne Parish in Sun City and Freedom Plaza Care Center in Peoria.

Services:  A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joachim and Anne Parish on Friday, April 7, 2017, at 10am.

Rev. Louis "Louie" Richard Mraz, osc

Died Monday, March 13, 2017 at the age of 89.

Fr. Mraz was born on March 8, 1928, in Streator, Illinois and attended the Crosier school in Wawasee, Indiana, in 1952.  He entered the Crosier novitiate in Hastings, Nebraska, one year later and professed his first vows August 28, 1954 in Hastings.  Fr. Mraz was ordained a priest May 30, 1959 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

After ordination Fr. Mraz was assigned to the Crosier mission in Agats, Papua, Indonesia, where he served the people for 20 years.  Upon his return to the United States in 1980 he became a member of the Crosier Community of Phoenix.  He served as Parochial Vicar at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Scottsdale from 1980 to 1989 and at St. Helen Parish in Glendale from 1989 to 2008 when he retired.

Services:  Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017, 11am at St. Helen Parish, 5510 W. Cholla Street, Glendale.

Rev. Ernest J. Engler

Died Monday, February 20, 2017 at the age of 89.

Fr. Engler was born July 14, 1927 and was Ordained to the Priesthood on June 2, 1951 for the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa.

In retirement Fr. Engler served at St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish/Prince of Peace Parishes.

Services:  A Memorial Mass will be held at Resurrection Church in Dubuque with burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Worthington, Iowa.

Rev. Gerald "Jerry" Thaar, osc

Died February 18, 2017 at the age of 79.

Fr. Thaar was born September 7, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan.  He entered the Crosier Order Aug. 27, 1958, making his first profession of vows Aug. 28, 1959. He was ordained a Catholic priest May 22, 1965.

Fr. Thaar served at Blessed Sacrament in Scottsdale 2002 – 2005 and in retirement was the Chaplain at Vi Grayhawk Senior Living Community in Scottsdale.  Fr. Thaar moved to the assisted living facility in Onamia, Minnesota, in 2014.

Services: Memorial Mass will be held on March 25, 2017 at 10am in the Priory Church of the Holy Cross in Phoenix.

Rev. Joseph McGaffin

Died February 12, 2017 at the age of 52.

Fr. McGaffin was born December 8, 1964 in Utica, New York, and Ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Phoenix on June 1, 1996.

Fr. McGaffin served as Parochial Vicar of St. Mary Parish in Chandler, St. Paul Parish in Phoenix, St. Daniel the Prophet Parish in Scottsdale, St. Jerome Parish in Phoenix and St. Clement of Rome Parish in Sun City.  He was named Pastor of Resurrection Parish in 2006 and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in 2010 where he was Pastor until his death.

Rev. Charles Kurgan, O. Carm.

Died November 21, 2016 at the age of 77.

Fr. Kurgan was born December 5, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois and Ordained for the Carmelite Order on May 27, 1965.

In 1974 he was appointed youth minister at St. Agnes Parish in Phoenix. During that time he also taught moral theology and liturgy at the Kino Institute, was Vicar for the Office of Worship, campus minister at Mesa and Scottsdale Community Colleges, and local vocation director.  Fr. Kurgan was Prior of the Carmelite's in Phoenix since 2010.

Rev. Gregory Santos, O.C.S.O.

Died Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at the age of 87.

Fr. Santos was born February 21, 1929 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  In 1950 he entered the monastery of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity in Huntsville, Utah, and was ordained a Trappist monk and priest on May 23, 1959 for the Abbey of the Holy Spirit, of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance.

In 1967 he moved to Georgia and continued his teaching at the Trappist Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers from 1967 through 1969. While in Georgia, he co-founded and was the director of The Bridge, a walk-in and residential adolescent alcohol and drug treatment center in Atlanta where he worked until its closing in 1975. He arrived to the Diocese of Phoenix in July 1991.  He lived as a retired priest in Flagstaff and assisted at San Francisco de Asis Parish and the northern parishes.

Rev. Louis Anthony Sigman

Died Monday, August 29, 2016, at the age of 87.

Fr. Sigman was born on December 19, 1928 in Chicago, IL and was ordained to the priesthood May 21, 1967 for the Diocese of Peoria.  He was incardinated to the Diocese of Phoenix in February 1973.

Fr. Sigman served in the Diocese of Tucson as Parochial Vicar of Mother of Sorrows Parish.  In the Diocese of Phoenix, he served as Parochial Vicar of St. Theresa Parish in Phoenix, Pastor of St. Daniel the Prophet Parish in Scottsdale and Corpus Christi Parish in Phoenix until the time of his retirement in July of 1998.  In retirement Fr. Sigman continued to serve the people of God whenever called upon.

Rev. William Condon

Died Wednesday, July 27, 2016.

Fr. Condon was born on April 20, 1927 in Joliet, IL and was ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1954 for the Diocese of Joliet.  He was the founding pastor of St. Raphael Church in Naperville, IL in 1963.

In retirement Fr. Condon moved to Mesa to be closer to dear friends and his beloved Cubs’ spring training facility. He served at St. Dominic Mission in Rio Verde and Ascension Church in Fountain Hills.

Rev. Peter Carota

Died Friday, July 8, 2016.

Fr. Carota was born November 15, 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 1997 for the Diocese of Stockton.

Fr. Carota founded St. Francis Catholic Kitchen in Santa Cruz, CA.  It was his goal to not just feed, clothe and shelter the poor, but also to heal their brokenness through bringing them to Jesus and His Church.  During his time in the Diocese of Phoenix he served at St. Catherine of Siena Parish.

Rev. Julio Lopresti, IVE

Died Monday, May 30, 2016 at the age of 47.

Fr. Lopresti was born January 21, 1969 and ordained to the priesthood for the Institute of the Incarnate Word on December 20, 1996 in Argentina.  He served in Brooklyn, New York; Cuba; New Bedford, Massachusetts; Bridgeport, Connecticut before arriving in the diocese.  Fr. Lopresti served at Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Anthony Parishes as Pastor from July 2012 until a few weeks ago when he moved to the east coast.

Rev. Brian Fenlon

Died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the age of 76.

Fr. Fenlon was born August 15, 1940 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Phoenix on May 31, 1975.  Fr. Fenlon served at Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral, St. Joseph Parish in Phoenix, Christ the King Parish in Mesa, and was the founding pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Scottsdale.  Fr. Fenlon served the sick and dying as a hospice chaplain and at several of our parishes in his retirement years.

Rev. Michael Nestor

Died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the age of 88.

Msgr. Nestor was born December 15, 1928 in McKeesport, PA. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 10, 1965 for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. He served as a retired priest in Phoenix with bi-ritual faculties since 1996. Our parishes in the East Valley were blessed by his many years of dedicated service.

Rev. Edmund Groves

Died, Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the age of 91.

Fr. Groves was born February 23, 1925 and ordained in Ireland for the Diocese of Tucson on June 16, 1949. He served at St. Catherine’s in Phoenix, St. Francis in Yuma, St. Matthew’s and Most Holy Trinity in Phoenix, and St. Mary’s in Chandler as Parochial Vicar before returning to Ireland.

Rev. Francisco D. Guianan, Jr., SOLT

Died Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the age of 59.

Fr. Guianan was born September 10, 1956 in the Philippines, and took his final vows on November 17, 1988 to the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT). Fr. Guianan served in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Kansas City, MO and most recently at Most Holy Trinity Parish in Phoenix as Parochial Vicar.

Rev. Thomas C. Weible

Died Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the age of 88.

Fr. Weible was born February 6, 1928 in Los Angeles, California, and ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on April 30, 1959. After retiring to Arizona Fr. Weible continued to offer priestly ministry in various parishes in the diocese.

Rev. Thomas "Tot" O'Dea

Died January 2, 2016, in Ireland at the age of 82.

Fr. O’Dea was born December 16, 1933, and ordained to the priesthood in Ireland for the Diocese of Tucson on June 7, 1958.  He served at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Phoenix, Queen of Peace Parish in Mesa, St. Anthony of Padua Parish Casa Grande, St. Francis Parish in Superior, St. Patrick Parish in Bisbee, St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, St. Matthew Parish in Phoenix, Christ the King Parish in Mesa, Holy Spirit Parish in Tempe, and he retired after serving as pastor of Ascension Parish in Fountain Hills in 2003.

The funeral Mass was held at Church of Christ the King, Ballycorick, Co Clare, Ireland on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 with burial on the church grounds.

Rev. Richard McGuire, OSC

Died Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at the age of 70.

Fr. McGuire’s profession of vows was August 28, 1966 in Hastings, Nebraska and his date of priesthood ordination was May 12, 1973 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He arrived in the Diocese of Phoenix in 2004 and served as Parochial Vicar at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Chandler from 2005 until his death.

Services were held at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish on Monday, October 5, 2015. Fr. McGuire is buried in Minnesota.

Rev. Daryl Olds, C.M.F.

Died Friday, April 3, 2015 at the age of 62.

Fr. Olds was born October 8, 1952 in Gillette, Wyoming. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in 1972. Relating his conversion story and ministry experience he stated, “In 1985 I had a very powerful experience of the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament while attending Mass with a friend. This experience changed my life and led me to enter the Catholic Church.” Shortly after this experience Fr. Olds joined the Claretian Missionaries and was ordained a priest in 1992. He arrived at Sacred Heart Parish in Prescott, July of 2002, where he served as Parochial Vicar and later as Pastor.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Parish in Prescott, AZ.

Fr. Harry “Dutch” Olivier, S.J.

Died March 17, 2015 at the age of 88.

Fr. Olivier was born September 5, 1926 and entered the Jesuits in 1944. He was ordained to the priesthood June 15, 1957 for the Jesuits California Province of the Society of Jesus. He arrived in Phoenix in July of 1987 as the Rector of Brophy Prep High School.

Services were held at St. Francis Xavier Church. Fr. Olivier is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery in Santa Clara, California.

Rev. Thomas Walsh

Died November 21, 2014 at the age of 98.

Fr. Walsh was ordained to the priesthood on June 13, 1942 for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He was incardinated to the Diocese of Tucson in 1962 and served at St. Cyril in Tucson and Sacred Heart parish in Nogales; St. Thomas the Apostle, Phoenix and St. Maria Goretti parish in Scottsdale. He was a counselor at Catholic Social Services and the Franciscan Renewal Center. He also served the Newman Center at ASU as the Director from 1963 to 1969. In retirement Fr. Walsh continued to serve God’s people especially at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Scottsdale where he resided.

He will be missed by many for his dedication and sense of humor, especially his self wit. In 2005 Fr. Wash was quoted in the Arizona Republic as saying “I read the Bible every day, but tell people I don’t need to because I’m so old I was there for most of it.” Fr. Walsh was a priest who wanted to be available for his people. He served the people with a sense of humor and love.

Services were held November 24, 2014, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Scottsdale. Fr. Walsh is buried at Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
