Lead a Small Group
Our goal is to equip you (yes, YOU) to lead a Christ in Our Neighborhood small group as easily as possible. This program thrives when groups are hosted in a neighborhood home, rather than in a room at the parish. You don’t need any extra training or special knowledge. All you need is a few friends, neighbors, or ministry volunteers and a healthy dose of hospitality! Here are steps to get you started.
- Extend invitations and be specific about your date, time, and time commitment (e.g. one hour a week over the next 6 weeks of Lent).
Note: It is recommended that groups be made up of no more than ten participants, so everyone can share within an hour meeting. - Before the meeting, read over the reflection and questions so you, the leader, are familiar with it.
- Make hard copies of the reflection for the whole group as a courtesy, at least for the first meeting. All content is also available online and mobile friendly.
- Set up some “art and environment” – a simple visual like a small table with a cross, Bible, and/or candle to help people keep focused on the Lord.
- When you have your meeting, as the leader, you are the facilitator of the discussion. Give everyone the chance to answer the questions each week. Try to stay focused on the reflection and questions, and do not deviate into political discussions, church policy, or gossip.
- Having light refreshments is generous, but not expected. Set the expectations for your group.
- When you finish the section your group has committed to (e.g. 6 weeks of Lent), make a plan for the next section! Some members of your group may want to continue journeying with you. Some may want to set up their own small groups. Let the Spirit lead.
