This Guide for the Spiritual Direction of Permanent Deacons grew out of a deep desire to improve the spiritual direction offered to the deacons and the men in diaconate formation in the Diocese of Phoenix. It addresses some of the particular challenges deacons face as they pursue the interior life of the spirit while integrating work, family and ministry responsibilities.

All clerics, from deacons to bishops, are called to put Christ first in their lives by giving priority to their spiritual life and living their vocation with charity and generosity. Deacons are called to be icons of Christ the Servant while living a primarily secular life. Only from a place of deep interiority will deacons be able to live out their vocations as servants and heralds of the Gospel. Quality spiritual direction is primary means of fostering a rich interior life of prayer and the pursuit of holiness.
