Msgr. Richard Moyer died June 27, 2023, at the age of 91.
Msgr. Moyer was born on January 12, 1932 in Sandusky, Ohio. He was 91 years old. He was ordained on May 3, 1964 for the Diocese of Tucson. His first priestly assignment was St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Yuma and then Sts. Peter and Paul in Tucson. When the Diocese of Phoenix was established in 1969, he remained in Phoenix. Among his many pastoral assignments, he served at Catholic Charities Foundation; he was Vicar of Northern Arizona, pastor of St. John Vianney in Sedona, rector of Sts. Simon and Jude Cathedral, pastor of St. Pius X, Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree, St. Timothy and St. Jerome Parish in Phoenix, where he was pastor from 1975 to 1984.
Among his many pastoral accomplishments, Msgr. Moyer was also Vicar General of the diocese; he built parishes and camps, established the Foundation for Senior Living and was a founding board member of Life Teen. He also met Pope St. John Paul II on occasion of his Apostolic Visit to Phoenix in 1987. On that same pastoral visit, St. John Paul II conferred on him the honorary title of “Monsignor”.
Services: Visitation & Vigil Service on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at St. Juan Diego Parish (3200 S Cooper Rd, Chandler, AZ 85286) at 6:00pm & 7:00pm . Funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 6, 2023, at St. Jerome Parish (10815 N 35th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85029) at 11:00am.
