Are you planning an event at your parish or deanery? Let us know so we can spread the word.

Year of Mercy at Your Parish

In addition to the events which Pope Francis’ himself will oversee (cf. iubilaeummisericordiae.va), here in our diocese the faithful will have access to Jubilee events on three interconnected levels: the diocese, deaneries, and parishes. Given the relatively brief time for Jubilee preparation for parishes in particular, Bishop Olmsted would like to draw attention to the following tasks for parish planning:

  • Use the Jubilee Hymn of Mercy at your parish (see below)
  • Use the official Year of Mercy Logo in parish correspondence and event promotion (see below).
  • Make more available the Sacrament of Penance, by adding at least one hour of Confession per week.
  • Foster the corporal and spiritual works of mercy with renewed zeal and coordination, keeping in mind Pope Francis desire that the faithful experience “signs of mercy.”

  • Make widely known the great opportunity for the faithful to receive the Jubilee Plenary Indulgence, generously extended by Pope Francis in particular to the following: pilgrims visiting the Holy Door(s), the sick and elderly, the incarcerated, those who practice the works of mercy, and the deceased. The Jubilee indulgence is a significant channel of spiritual power in the Jubilee Year of Mercy; with clear teaching and encouragement, the faithful will greatly benefit from it.

  • Keep church and chapel doors unlocked during the day (as far as possible), with Year of Mercy resources and literature available (available for purchase at the two sites listed below).

  • Coordinate with your Dean and deanery pastors to facilitate fruitful participation in the following: the “24 Hours for the Lord” celebration on March 4-5, 2016; the Diocesan “Mercy Nights” on First Fridays; the various Diocesan celebrations; as well as any other deanery or parish Jubilee events.
