Msgr. Peter Dai Bui serves as the Vicar for Clergy for the Diocese of Phoenix.

Msgr. Peter Dai Bui was born in An Thoi, a little fishing village on Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam. He comes from a large, Catholic family; he is the 8th of 12 children. After the Vietnam War, in order to freely practice their faith, the family escaped with neighbors from Communist Vietnam on his father’s fishing boat. Upon arrival in Bangkok, Thailand, the famous war photographer, Eddie Adams, took an iconic picture of the family boat approaching the harbor. These photos, called “Boat of No Smiles” were presented to U.S. Congress, paving a way for future Vietnamese Boat People to enter the United States as refugees.

After obtaining degrees in philosophy and theology, Msgr. Bui was ordained in Rome, Italy, on December 24, 2003, for the Legionaries of Christ. In the first three years of his priesthood, he was assigned as chaplain of a Catholic school in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2007, he returned to the U.S. and served as parochial vicar of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Queen Creek, AZ. In 2009, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Phoenix while serving as parochial vicar at Christ the King Parish in Mesa. In 2010, he served as pastor of Resurrection Parish in Tempe. In 2011, he served at the Holy See as official of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, representing the Holy See with the coordination of humanitarian aid and charitable intiatives to countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa; in 2014, he was named a “Monsignor” by Pope Francis. In 2017, he returned to serve in the Diocese of Phoenix as pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Tempe and theological consultant and priest assistant to the Bishops. Since July, 1, 2022, he has been in his current assignment as vicar for clergy.

As a seminarian and later as a priest, Msgr. Bui lived in Italy, Germany, Ireland, Colombia, and Venezuela. He is fluent in English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Italian, and German.
