It is understandable that some parents are not sure whether they can adequately support their son during his seminary training. This is another common anxiety. In many other moments in your son’s life you have felt ready to offer sound advice from your own past experiences.

Formation for the priesthood begins with a focus on the seminarian’s relationship with Jesus Christ. After becoming a disciple of Christ at his Baptism, formation allows a man to grow as a disciple who is discerning and preparing for ordained ministry. The gradual development of the future priest has holiness as its goal, to become configured to Christ, Head and Shepherd, Servant and Spouse.

Discernment is the process of discovery through which an individual learns how God calls him or her to love and serve him through prayer, reflection, and discussion.
